Jurassic Asbestos Services were contacted by a long-standing client in Bridgwater, Somerset to undertake the emergency removal of asbestos-containing slate roof tiles following storm damage which had compromised the roof covering and created the need for urgent weatherproofing works.
Due to the damaged condition of the tiles and the risk associated with disturbance, controlled asbestos removal was required before roofing contractors could safely proceed with reinstatement works.
The project involved the careful removal and disposal of asbestos slate tiles from the affected roof pitch, ensuring minimal breakage and strict control of fibre release throughout the works.
Given the urgency of the situation, our team developed a rapid response plan to ensure the works were completed safely, efficiently, and without delaying follow-on roofing activities.
All works were carried out from fixed scaffold access fitted with valid Scafftag certification, providing safe working at height arrangements for our operatives.
Removal was completed using controlled non-licensed techniques, including:
- Careful manual removal of asbestos slate tiles
- Controlled wetting methods to minimise fibre release
- Packaging of waste into secure, lockable asbestos waste compartments
- Thorough cleaning using H-class vacuum equipment and damp wiping techniques
- Licensed transport and compliant disposal of asbestos waste
Works were undertaken in accordance with the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2012, ensuring both operative safety and environmental protection.
The asbestos slate tiles were successfully removed within the required timeframe, allowing roofing contractors to proceed with urgent weatherproofing works without delay.
Older domestic and industrial properties across Bridgwater and the wider Somerset region commonly contain asbestos slate roofing materials, highlighting the importance of engaging competent asbestos specialists when storm damage or refurbishment works occur.
